Paint protection film and ceramic coating are often lumped together, but they do fundamentally different things. Choosing between them — or combining both — comes down to understanding what you're protecting against.
Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your paint's clear coat. It creates a hard, hydrophobic surface layer that repels water, blocks UV rays, and resists chemical contamination (bird droppings, road grime, iron fallout). Rated 9H on the pencil hardness scale — significantly harder than clear coat. Does not absorb physical impact.
Paint protection film (PPF) is a thick, optically clear urethane film physically applied over the paint. It's designed to absorb rock chips, road debris, and minor physical impacts before they reach the paint. Quality films are self-healing — light scratches disappear with heat. Does not enhance hydrophobic performance on its own.
| Property | Ceramic Coating | PPF |
|---|---|---|
| Rock chip protection | No | Yes — primary purpose |
| UV protection | Strong | Moderate (film absorbs some UV) |
| Hydrophobic / water beading | Strong — water sheets off | Minimal without coating over top |
| Chemical resistance | Strong (bird droppings, tar, iron) | Moderate |
| Scratch resistance | Light swirl marks only | Moderate physical scratches |
| Self-healing | No | Yes (premium films) |
| Cost (full vehicle) | $599–$749 at Meridian Detail | $4,000–$10,000+ |
| Durability | 3–5 years | 5–10 years |
If your concern is UV damage, water spots, bird droppings, oxidation, and reduced maintenance: ceramic coating is the right choice and the better value.
If your concern is rock chips and physical impact damage — especially on a highway commuter, exotic car, or vehicle driven in construction zones: PPF on the front-end impact zones is the right choice.
If you want maximum protection on a high-value vehicle: PPF on impact zones + ceramic coating over the entire car is the ideal combination. The film handles chips; the coating handles everything else.
The most common scenario: A Newport Beach Porsche or Range Rover owner who parks outside and wants to maintain paint condition without constant waxing. For that owner, ceramic coating alone is the right call — the ROI is strong, and the coastal UV + salt air environment is exactly what coating excels at protecting against.
We specialize in mobile ceramic coating — applied at your driveway, fully self-contained. Starting at $599 for sedans and $749 for SUVs, with full decontamination included. We do not currently install PPF (it requires a dust-controlled environment), but we'll tell you honestly if your vehicle is a candidate for PPF before coating and recommend shops we trust for that work.
Considering ceramic coating? Book at Meridian Detail — Newport Beach mobile application, starting at $599. We come to you, bring everything, and include full decontamination before coating goes on.
